Poison Prevention
March 16-22 is Poison Prevention Week!
Poisons are lurking in more than your medicine cabinet! Did you know that each year in the US, nearly 100 children die from poisoning, and more than one million are injured by poisonous substances? It only takes an instant for your child to find something poisonous -- unfortunately, it also takes an instant for the poison to take affect.
There are many products in our home that can harm our children -- in our medicine cabinets, under our sinks, in our garage, and even in bottles left out on the counter. Don't forget to put medications far away from a child's reach and in childproof containers. Vitamins and pills can be mistaken for candy. Houseplants can also be dangerous to children -- make sure to keep poisonous plants out of the home.
Be sure you have the following items on hand: child-resistant locks for cabinets and doors, child-resistant packaging for all medications, the phone number of the poison control center 1-800-222-1222. Also, in case of emergency have Syrup of Ipecac and activated charcoal -- use only as directed by the poison control center.
