Tips for Raising A Healthy Child
1. Make sure that your child knows that you love them unconditionally.
2. Never tell your child that they are fat.
3. Strict diets are NOT for children. Neither is depriving them of food if they are hungry.
4. Don't induct your kids to the "clean plate club" if they are not hungry do NOT make them eat until the plate is empty.
5. Serve your children balanced meals with "single" servings of food so that they don't fall prey to "portion distortion."
6. Teach them how to read food labels and how to determine "single" servings of their favorite foods.
7. Take your kids shopping and emphasize healthy food choices instead of high calorie, nutrient depleted desserts and snacks.
8. Offer healthier snacks like light popcorn or pretzels instead of chips.
9. Serve fruit with whipped cream or frozen yogurt instead of cake cookies or ice cream for dessert.
10. Limit trips to fast food restaurants - If you must go, stress "happy meals" and healthier choices.
11. Discourage your children from eating in front of the TV or computer.
12. Make regular exercise a regular part of your family's life.
13. Regularly involve your children in activities like swimming, or rec league sports and activities.
14. Limit tv watching and time spent sitting at the computer.
15. Be a healthy role model for your children by exercising regularly, maintaining an active lifestyle and maintaining a balanced, healthy food plan.
