The New Face of School Safety

Testing, homework, and bullying are just a few of the things that children have had to deal with in school. But now schools across the nation are facing a new and difficult challenge. In the wake of recent school violence, school officials are making changes to improve school safety. Some schools are locking more doors, installing cameras, and others are no longer allowing parents on campus during school hours. As with any new procedure, some parents are opposed to these new safety measures and think schools are going too far. But is there really any limit to how much we can do to protect our children and school faculty while at school?

Ever since the infamous Columbine High School shootings in Colorado in April 2001, school violence has been more widely experienced and talked about. Don't ever think that school violence won't happen where you live, or where your child goes to school. There have been too many episodes of school violence in the news recently: on October 2, 2006 in a Pennsylvania Amish school, a man tied up 10 young girls and shot them, killing five before killing himself. On September 29, a school principal was gunned down in Cazenovia, Wisconsin by a 15-year-old student. And just two days before that, on September 27, a man took six girls hostage at Platte Canyon High School in Colorado. One of these violent events should be enough to sway parents to support all the new safety procedures that are and will be taking place in their child's schools, as they are meant to protect lives. It's unfortunate that we must become more vigilant in our actions, but we have no choice, as the world that we are living in has changed.

No one is free from violence, no matter where they live. But all across the United States, we can make our schools safer. Everyone responds in a different way to senseless acts of violence, but school officials have a responsibility to respond in a similar way. They need to do whatever they can in order to protect students and faculty members. If they have to forbid parents to step foot on campus during school hours, they should do this. If they have to lock all outside doors to the school so that the only entrance remaining open is the one to the school office, they should do this. Show support to your child's school and let school officials know that you appreciate all they are doing to improve school safety. After all, it's your children they are trying to protect.
