Used Car Seat Dangers
You might think you're getting a bargain at a thrift shop, but it might not be worth it.
The Dangers of Buying Used Car Seats There are many bargains awaiting your purchase at area thrift shops, yard sales, and other similar functions. Unfortunately, there is one item in particular that you should pass right up...a used child safety seat. A safety seat bought in this situation has an unknown history. It could have been in an accident. If it was, you might or might not see damage from it. Among the possible signs of problems of used car seats...cracked plastic; worn straps (they should show no signs of being stretched...possibility of breaking); parts that are put together wrong; structural damage from heating and cooling (seats stay in the car all the time); missing locking clip (some seat belts require this clip); twisted straps and missing buckles; missing base; seat could have been in a car accident; previous recalls.
If you do happen to buy a used car seat, you should at least call the manufacturer to see if that model has been recalled. Buying a car seat this way might not be worth the risk...too many things can go wrong.
