Eating Disorders: Children in Crisis
How does your child view their body? Do they think they're too fat or too thin? Are they dieting excessively? Could you tell if they were? Would you know the signs of an eating disorder? This month's series of articles will help answer those questions and introduce you to some dangerous eating disorders. If you or someone you know has an eating disorder, you'll find this month's articles very helpful.
While searching for information for this month's article, I was stunned to find the number of websites that were not only not helpful to children with eating disorders, but actually encouraged disorders such as anorexia nervosa. As a parent of a young child, I do not have to worry about my child surfing the Internet quite yet. But to parents whose children are old enough, you should be aware that there are large support groups online that will support your child's eating disorder. I was not aware how many websites exist that not only support children in their quest to destroy their bodies, but they provide actual tips for anorexics and bulimics to further harm themselves, both physically and mentally. I won't list any of these sites for obvious reasons, but they are fairly easy to find, and have an alarming number of supportive members. Websites that promote negative eating habits are dangerous for young children and especially teenage girls who are very impressionable and are still discovering what is acceptable behavior. The media certainly doesn't make things easy for children...by idealizing ultra-thin models and repeatingly informing the public how to get into shape, they are attesting to their acceptance of this negative behavior.
From what I have found, some Internet companies such as Yahoo have closed down numerous pro-anorexia websites. Parents whose children are struggling with an eating disorder need to remain aware and continue to monitor their child's time online. Internet companies are not required to remove such websites, so many more do still exist.
The following series of articles will help to inform you on the topic of the main eating disorders that children are dealing with. If you or someone you know is suffering from an eating disorder, please know you do not have to be alone. There are many organizations that will be supportive and help to set you on the road to good health.
