How to Keep Your Child Learning Through the Summer Months
A parent is a child's first and most important teacher. Why is this so? Most of the time, parents are the ones who know their children the best. They know what they like, what they don't like, what they are capable of understanding and learning, and what they are not. I am an advocate of parents being involved in their children's everyday learning - there are always opportunities to make learning experiences out of everything that happens throughout your child's day. Learning at home has definite benefits.
I always try and take time to supplement my child's learning after her school day - learning is fun! But what do you do when school is out for the summer? How do you keep your child interested in learning? How do you keep them reading? Can you keep learning alive?
Many parents may not be sure how to make their home "learning-friendly" - Here are a few ideas from the U.S. Department of Education:
- Have high expectations for your child's learning and behavior, both at home and at school.
- Praise and encourage your child.
- Emphasize effort and achievement, and be a role model for getting work done before play.
- Establish rules and routines in the home.
- Monitor television viewing.
- Limit after-school jobs and activities.
- Encourage your child to share information about school and respond with empathy.
- If you don't do anything else, read to your young child or have him or her read to you every night. Encourage older children to read by reading yourself and by having interesting and appropriate materials available.
