Child Drowning/Prevention
Drowning is the 2nd leading cause of accidental injury and death to young children. How can you protect your child?

Child Drowning/Prevention Drowning is the 2nd leading cause of accidental injury and death to children under age 14. Children can drown in any amount of water...as large as a swimming pool or the ocean, or as small as a bathtub or a bucket of water. It can happen quicker than the blink of an eye. If you think you have that one second it takes to answer the phone while your young child is taking a bath, you don't. Do not leave young children unattended in the bathtub...and if you notice your child is missing, check your bathroom or pool area first.

Adult supervision is the most important factor in keeping a child safe, but it is also necessary to use other prevention methods to ensure a child's safety. Make sure to swim in the ocean only when lifeguards are on duty. For pools at home, make sure you have a safety fence installed...pool covers and pool alarms are added safety measures. Also install door alarms on all doors leading out to your pool. Again, if your child is missing, always check the pool area first.

The CPSC offers 2 FREE publications to help prevent child drownings: "Safety Barrier Guidelines for Pools" (CPSC362), & "How to plan for the Unexpected" (CPSC359). Please send for your FREE copies of the publications...send your name and address to "Pool Safety", U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Washington, D.C. 20207.
