Tips to Help You Get Organized for October

FINALLY ORGANIZED FINALLY FREEAre you an organized person? Are you able to clean your home with a blink of an eye, able to sort through life's daily clutter with a single polished nail? If you're not, don't fret! We're here to help :-).

From Maria Gracia, author of Finally Organized, Finally Free, we bring you some organizing tips to help get you through this month :-).

1. HALLOWEEN:

  • Make a list of everything you want to do for Halloween--such as making/getting costumes for the kids, having a party, visiting a festival, carving a pumpkin, getting some scary books at the library, taking the kids trick-or-treating and safety reminders.
  • Search the Web and use your local newspaper to find out what Halloween festivities are going on in your area.
  • Prioritize your list, and schedule time for each on the family calendar.
  • Once Halloween is over, Christmas is right around the corner. Don't forget to pick up your Get Organized Now! Holiday Planner.
  • Have a happy and safe Halloween!

2. YOUR WALLET:
  • If your wallet is getting old and ragged, now is the perfect time to get yourself a new one.
  • Empty out your wallet completely. Do this on an empty table, so you don't loose anything.
  • Sort the contents into organized piles: credit cards, photos, money, discount cards, driver's license, and so on.
  • Toss anything that is outdated. Cut up expired credit cards before you toss. Look for expired coupons and discount cards you never use. Then get rid of them.
  • Decide if your wallet contains anything that must be kept, but you don't need to carry around with you constantly. Store these items in your home or office instead.
  • Re-organize everything else back into your wallet, keeping the items you use all the time, in convenient, easily accessible slots.

3. YOUR KNICK KNACKS:
  • Go through your knick knacks and decide what items you really enjoy displaying, and which you can do without.
  • Give away or toss any knick knacks you no longer enjoy. Many people build up tons of wedding favors, trinkets and souvenirs over the years that are doing nothing more than taking up space and gathering dust.
  • Keep the knick knacks that you really enjoy displaying, but arrange them in an organized, pleasant manner.
  • You don't have to display all of your treasures at once. Designate a Rotating Box. Store some of your knick knacks away, and display some. When the season or your mood changes, simply rotate the ones on display into storage, and the ones in storage on display.
  • Knick knacks don't have to be taking up space on a table or a desk. Install some shelves on the wall, and display them there. You'll be freeing up lots of space.

4. YOUR BOOKS:
  • Skim through your book titles, collecting any you no longer want into a large box or shopping bag.
  • Donate or sell unwanted books to your library, or to a second hand book store. Sell textbooks back to a school book store.
  • Organize the books you are keeping on book shelves, or in book cases, alphabetically by title within genre.
  • If some of your older books have covers that are ripped, torn or loose, get them fixed. Expensive books that you wish to preserve for a long time should be brought to a book bindery. Less expensive books can be wrapped in attractive book covers. Purchase them, or make them yourself.

5. YOUR GENERAL OFFICE AREA:
  • Be sure your office floor is clear of loose files and paper. If it isn't, plan to get those things off the floor and into a filing cabinet or recycle bin this month.
  • Have a visitor chair in your office? Free it from any paper piles sitting on top of it.
  • Check out your desk top. Is it loaded with papers?
  • Spend a few minutes each day clearing it off.
  • Clear off the area around your computer, except for the few things you need on a daily basis.
  • Get photographs and other memorabilia off your desk and credenza, and hang them up on the wall instead. This will keep your workspace free.
  • Read Chapter 39 in my book, Finally Organized, Finally Free to discover a bunch of simple, but effective, ways to organize your office, your home, and your life!
