3 Questions for Parent’s Night

September is synonymous with back to school and it’s also National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. School is the place where young people spend the most time, aside from home. Students consume up to 50 percent of their daily calories while on campus and are often in attendance for before and after school programs, in addition to their required classes. Therefore, schools are an essential setting for establishing healthy habits in young people that help combat childhood obesity, like nutritious eating and regular physical activity.

Parents are presented with a BIG problem when kids say they’re not hungry.

I call it The Hunger Dilemma.

  • Should you believe that your little tykes know what they’re talking about, thereby teaching them that they are masters of the universe (or at least masters of their own tummies)? OR
  • Should you use your special, souped-up, parent powers to divine hunger lurking around the corner (knowing that it will only rear it’s ugly head 5 minutes after you’ve finished cleaning the kitchen), and assert that your little buggers need to eat (more)?

As my kids get older, I struggle sometimes to still see them as children. My daughter is my height, she’s wicked funny, and I think I forget sometimes that she’s not my friend. Don’t get me wrong…she is. But she’s my daughter first. He’s my son first. They are friends second. They will be more my friend as time goes by, but now, they are more my children. And I have to protect them. Sometimes from me.

One of the biggest limitations we all face, as we try to find this point of power, is fear. No one escapes this limitation in some form or another. Once, early in my consciousness studies, I was ruminating on the idea of power. I decided I would look for my power in a meditation. Once still and quiet, I looked around and saw a ladder leading up. I climbed for a very long time up beyond the clouds, and came to the edge of a wall. Over that wall, I knew I would find my power. I peered over that wall, and what I saw struck instant fear in my heart. My power, it seemed, went on for as far as the eye could see into infinity. I quickly climbed down that ladder, a bit awestruck. Awesome power does require an awesome responsibility. Was I ready for that?
