Video Review: Surf's Up!

Purchase this item on DVD. Your purchase helps support our family of websites.

Penguin hopes hero will help him catch a wave.

Your son just finished a long Little League season in which his team suffered a grueling 0-13 record. As a pick-me-up, you take him to a local minor league game. Not only does your son catch a foul ball, but the home team’s pitcher takes time after the game to teach him his secret slider pitch. Your son hasn’t stopped talking about his new hero since.

The power of a real hero is highlighted in the movie Surf’s Up, released on home video October 9. After watching the movie, use our family conversation starters to splash into a talk about who inspires you the most. Then make our craft, “Hang Ten,” to bring the big-screen lesson to life!

Surf’s Up features penguin Cody Maverick (voice of Shia LeBeouf), a surfing newcomer who dreams of following in the webbed footsteps of his supposedly deceased idol, Big Z. When a surf scout scours Antarctica looking for new surfers, Cody swims at the chance.

Cody lands in Pen Gu Island to compete in his first professional surf-off against trophy-loving Tank Evans (voice of Diedrich Bader). After a major wipe-out, Cody is rescued by lovely lifeguard Lani (voice of Zooey Deschanel). She takes Cody to recover with her uncle, a washed-up surfer (voice of Jeff Bridges) who turns out to be a terrific teacher. This candid coach helps Cody find out what’s most important both in and out of the water.

Talk Together

Take turns sharing your personal heroes. Your hero could be anyone from a figure in history to a philanthropic celebrity to the veterinarian who saved your dog’s life. Share why that person inspires you so much.

In the movie, Cody had the opportunity to meet his idol on two separate occasions. How might Cody’s personality have been different if he looked up to Tank Evans instead of Big Z?

What questions would you ask your hero if you had the chance to hang out together? What lesson or skill would you most want your hero to teach you?

Is there anyone who may consider you his hero? Maybe your cousin looks up to you because you’re the fastest runner in town. Or your little brother loves how you protect him again bullies. How does knowing you’re someone’s role model change the way you live your life?

Play Together: Hang Ten

A wave of inspiration can be found here-o!

You will need:

  • Lamp with lampshade
  • Ribbon
  • Pictures (your own or from magazines)
  • Double sided tape
  • Scissors

CINEMATTERS Cut ten equal size pieces of ribbon. Length will vary depending on height of lamp. Find ten pictures of people or things that inspire you. Cut out each photo and use double sided tape to attach to the ribbon.

Hang each of the laminated photos by taping the ribbon to the bottom of a small lampshade. Then each night before you turn off the lights, look at your hero collection for encouragement. Just like Cody, you can wipe out self-doubt by looking to your heroes!
