CINEMATTERS Veggie Pirates Pick the
Right Path.

Ah, the lure of the unmanned trick-or-treat bowl! Your daughter slips her magic wand under her arm and studies the note attached to the bowl. "Please help yourself to one piece of candy," she reads slowly. From your place a few feet away, you watch her eye the bowl, which is brimming with her favorite chocolate bars. She selects one and drops it in her bag. But as she turns to leave, a rowdy group of older goblins suddenly storms the porch, knocking her to the ground. In seconds they have emptied the bowl and run away.

Your daughter is shocked. Why would those kids ignore the note and take all the candy, she wonders. You remind her that we are faced with choices every day. Choosing to do the right thing is always best, as the swashbuckling stars of The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything: A VeggieTales Movie learn on their high-seas adventure. Watch the film, available this month on DVD, and discuss it with your children using our Talk Together points. Then, tell your mateys to buck up and "Walk the Plank" in our fun activity.

The second theatrical release from the creators of Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie, The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything brings together Larry the Cucumber, who plays Elliott; Mr. Lunt, who plays Sedgewick; and Pa Grape, who plays George. They are three lowly "cabin boys" – waiters at a local pirate dinner show – who long to be part of the show. They think it will impress their loved ones. But their big audition ends in disaster.

Their dreams dashed, the three friends head home to their boring lives. Then a strange metal ball drops out of the sky. As they examine it, the ball transforms into a wooden boat. The friends climb in and – whoosh! – off they go into the past. There, they are welcomed by Princess Eloise as her heroes, summoned by the mysterious "Helpseeker" ball.

Eloise needs the "pirates’" help in rescuing her brother, Prince Alexander, who has been kidnapped by their evil uncle, Robert the Terrible. Robert plans to exchange his nephew for the King’s power. Facing their fears, the three friends set out with the princess and her crew in search of Robert’s hidden pirate’s den.

Along the way, they must navigate unknown seas, search an island inhabited by "rock monsters" and, finally, face Robert and his henchmen in a fight to the death. Elliott, Sedgewick and George are challenged at every step to do the right thing – even when it is difficult. In the end, the King arrives just in time to defeat Robert and save his children and their new friends.

Buoyed by a new sense of self-confidence, the veggie pirates return to their real lives at the dinner theater. But Robert the Terrible has secretly tagged along and joins in the onstage drama, bent on wreaking real mayhem. Elliott, Sedgewick and George join the fray and save the day. Why? Because, they declare, it was the right thing to do.

Talk Together

Why aren’t George, Elliott and Sedgewick very happy being cabin boys at the pirate show? Do you think their friends would like them more if they were in the show? Why or why not?

The veggies aren’t very good pirates. George is not brave, Sedgewick is lazy and Elliott is scared of everything. So why did the Helpseeker bring them to save Prince Alexander? Did the Helpseeker make a good choice? How did the veggies overcome their fears to become heroes?

Remember a time when you were faced with making a choice. How did you know which was the right thing to do? Who helped you make the right choice?

Play Together: Walk the Plank Test your taste buds in this swashbuckling activity!

You will need:

  • Blindfolds (1 for each person)
  • Various fruits and vegetables cut into bite-sized pieces (include some of your children’s favorites as well as a few they usually pass up)
  • Wooden cutting board

CINEMATTERS Challenge players to see how far they’ll go down the “plank.” Blindfold each player. Line up the fruits and vegetables on a wooden cutting board. Give each player a taste of the foods as you move down the board. The one who gets all the way to the end wins. Award a healthy treat to the winner. Your kids will learn that doing – or in this case, eating – the right things always pays off in the end.
