Happy-Go-Lucky Hero Saves Helpless Whos.
Your daughter’s paralyzing fear of snakes is put to the test when a local herpetologist visits her school. Of course, he brings along a few of his slithery friends, as well. But when the expert introduces the class to a colorful corn snake named Coco, your daughter is captivated. Before long she is petting the little critter. That evening, she comes in from taking out the garbage and calmly announces she has seen a snake outside. As you reach for the hoe, she stops you, saying that snakes are important, too.
She has learned that nothing – or no one – is too insignificant to merit our compassion. It’s a concept we all struggle with, at times. But just like the hefty hero of Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who!, she knows that we must be considerate of others, regardless of our fears. Pick up Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who!, available this month on DVD, and enjoy a movie night at home with your family. Afterward, Talk Together about Horton’s dilemma and how it relates to your own life. Then create your own “Just for Who” gift tags – just in time for the holidays!
Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who! is based on the classic children’s book about a happy-go-lucky elephant named Horton. One day, Horton, with his keen sense of hearing, detects a plaintive cry for help coming from a tiny speck floating by. He sets the speck on a clover and vows to care for it. After all, his motto is, “A person’s a person, no matter how small.” But none of the other inhabitants of the Jungle of Nool can hear the cry. Their leader, the grumpy Kangaroo, orders Horton to give up the speck. She doesn’t want him putting crazy ideas into the minds of the children.
Horton soon discovers that there is, indeed, an entire world called Whoville inside the speck. Its mayor, Ned Dodd, tells Horton he must save their world by placing the speck in a safe place. So Horton heads to Mount Nool, the safest place in the jungle. But Kangaroo and her henchmen try to stop him at every step.
Finally, Kangaroo orders Horton caged. Mayor Dodd and all the Whos in Whoville gather in the town square to collectively call for help, hoping their tiny voices joined together will be heard in Horton’s world. At the last moment, the jungle animals hear the cry coming from the speck. They rescue Whoville and Horton becomes a hero.
Talk Together
Horton believes the speck needs his help, even when no one else does. What does he do to care for the speck? What would you do to take care of the speck?
You were once very small, too. Ask your mom or dad what they did to take care of you. What would have happened if they did not do those things?
Think of someone or something in your family who is small, like a baby brother or your pet puppy. What do you do to help take care of them? Name some things that make them important to you.
