CINEMATTERS Friends Find Future Plans That Fit Just Fine

Some kids seem born to play ball – but not your boy. He’s a natural in the kitchen, wielding a whisk as winsomely as some kids swing a bat. But when his buddies invite him to try out for the baseball team, he waffles. Can a batch of double-fudge brownies stand up to a sweet triple play?

Just as he feared, he strikes out on the field. His disappointment doesn’t last long, though, when his friends show up begging for some of his mouth-watering chocolate chip cookies. They recognize that your son’s culinary talent is a perfect fit, even if a catcher’s mitt isn’t.

Finding that perfect fit is the goal of the young stars of High School Musical 3: Senior Year, now available on DVD from Disney Pictures. Watch it with your family and then have a "fitting" discussion of your own about the film. Afterward, show your kids they will always fit into your family team with our "Fit to a Tee" activity.

In High School Musical 3: Senior Year, the kids from East High are enjoying their senior year and all it brings – prom, college applications, first love and, of course, the latest high school musical. Troy and Gabriella are set for the leads, much to the chagrin of the self-absorbed Sharpay and her twin brother, Ryan. Then their teacher, Ms. Darbus, announces that four of the student performers – Troy, Kelsi, Sharpay and Ryan – are in the running for a scholarship to the prestigious Juilliard School. Sharpay is determined to beat out her classmates for the scholarship money.

Meanwhile, Troy must decide where his real college interest lies. Should he follow his childhood dream of playing college basketball for the University of Albuquerque? Or is fate calling him to pursue another path – a future on stage? His girlfriend, Gabriella, is struggling with her own college decisions. She enrolls in an early-entry program at Stanford, but soon realizes it’s not a good fit, for now. Troy convinces her to come home for prom and the gang is reunited one last time.

After the group’s performance in the spring musical, Ms. Darbus announces the winners of the Juilliard scholarship: Kelsi and Ryan! After a lot of soul searching, Troy decides to follow his dream – to the University of California-Berkley, where he will play basketball and study acting. The East High friends find future plans that fit them to a tee!

Talk Together

Before you discuss High School Musical 3: Senior Year, gather a few old baby clothes your child once wore, as well as some of your adult clothing items. Let your children "try on" the clothes to see how well they fit. Why didn’t the baby clothes or the adult clothes fit very well? Were you surprised?

Troy always planned to play college basketball, but acting and singing were fun, too. Name some things you like to do. Why do you enjoy doing them? How do you know if they are a good "fit" for you?

Parents, share how you came to choose your own career or primary hobby? Why did you make that decision? What factors influenced your choice? Give your child a checklist to use in selecting a hobby or activity.

Play Together: Fit to a Tee! Remind your child he’ll always fit into at least one team – your family!

You will need:

  • Solid-colored T-shirt
  • Iron-on letters
  • Fabric markers

CINEMATTERS Follow the manufacturer’s directions for the iron-on letters to spell out TEAM (fill in your family’s last name) on the T-shirt. Then use the fabric markers to write notes of encouragement to your child on the T-shirt. Your kid will find that being part of a special family is the most comfortable fit of all!
