CINEMATTERS Courageous Canine Caravans Cross-Country for Close Companion

A serious injury on the soccer field has sidelined your daughter. Back home from the hospital, she’s missing her friends even more than her mobility. The phone calls fly fast and furious, but your ailing athlete is longing for a friendly face. The next day, her best friend shows up with textbooks, homework and a plate of cupcakes!

That visit teaches your daughter that real friends go the extra mile. And it’s what the young heroine of Disney’s Bolt, now available on DVD, learns about her own four-legged friend. Enjoy Bolt with your family at home and then talk about the value of friendship with our Talk Together conversation starters. Later, surprise a friend with our S-Mile Markers friendship bracelets.

In Bolt, Penny and her genetically altered dog battle bad guys as they search for Penny’s dad, a brilliant scientist who has been kidnapped by Dr. Calico. Bolt uses his super powers to protect his beloved Penny and defeat evil. But what Bolt doesn’t know is that Penny is an actress and their “adventures” are a TV show. He has spent his entire life on the set and has never lived a “normal” dog’s life.

One day, Bolt misunderstands and thinks that Penny, too, has been kidnapped. He breaks out of his trailer to rescue her but winds up in a box that is being shipped from Hollywood to New York City. In the Big Apple, Bolt meets Mittens, a street-wise alley cat. The two of them set out for Hollywood.

Along the way, Bolt and Mittens meet up with Rhino, a hamster who roams around in a plastic ball. Rhino, a huge “Bolt” TV show fan, is star-struck when he meets his hero. He offers to help Bolt get back to Hollywood and joins the journey.

Bolt finally makes it back to the TV soundstage where Penny has continued filming the show with a Bolt lookalike. Bolt thinks she has forgotten him; dejected, he turns to leave. But an accident on the set sparks a fire that quickly engulfs the building. Bolt hears Penny cry for help and he springs into action. He pulls Penny to safety just as the building collapses behind them.

In the end, Penny leaves the TV show and moves with her mother, Bolt, Mittens and Rhino to the country for a quieter life. Bolt finds that it was worth going that extra mile for his friend.

Talk Together

Bolt and Penny were really just the stars of a popular TV show – or were they? How did they show they really cared for each other? What was real and what was part of the show?

Mittens the cat did not believe Penny really loved Bolt. Why? What happened to Mittens that made her suspicious of humans? Think about a time that a friend said or did something to hurt you. How did it affect your friendships with others?
