And the winner is … not your son. He is devastated by a loss at the state science fair. This was not how he had envisioned the end of all his research and hard work. But a representative from a prestigious college is impressed by the project. He says your son may be just the kind of student the college is looking for. With a little more effort, your son could qualify for a scholarship. It’s up to him to write his own happy ending after all.

Happy endings don’t just happen; sometimes you have to create them yourself. That’s what the hero of Bedtime Stories learned – and it’s one your children will benefit from discovering. Watch the movie, now available on DVD, and then talk about it using our conversation starters. Afterward, you can get your kids in on the action with our Twisted Tales activity.

In Walt Disney’s Bedtime Stories, hapless handyman Skeeter toils away at the hotel his father founded, which is now owned by a hotel chain. Skeeter dreams of becoming the hotel’s manager, but the owner names someone else to the position.

Meanwhile, Skeeter’s sister, Wendy, asks him to babysit her kids while she interviews for a new job in another state. The school where she is currently the principal is closing. She has arranged for Skeeter to stay with her son and daughter, Patrick and Bobbi, at night and her friend Jill to take over during the day.

At bedtime, Skeeter entertains the children with an imaginative tale, starring himself as the hero who saves the day and rescues the princess. But the kids add their own wild ending. The next day, the dream comes true! After that, Skeeter tries to create bigger and better stories, always aiming to land his dream job and the beautiful girl. But the kids’ wacky twists on the tales always seem to derail his efforts at career success.

His big dream of becoming manager of the hotel finally does come true. But he discovers that the owner of the hotel chain plans to build his newest project on the site of Wendy’s school – which is why it is closing. Skeeter puts his own career in jeopardy and, ultimately, saves the school and wins Jill’s heart. It’s not what he might have planned originally, but everyone really does live happily ever after!

Talk Together

Skeeter always thought he would grow up and become the manager of his father’s hotel. How do you think he felt when that did not happen?

When Skeeter’s bedtime stories came true, they never turned out quite the way he wanted. Why not? What ending would you have come up with to his stories?

Tell about a time you expected something to turn out differently, such as a vacation trip or a visit to the doctor. What happened to change your expectations? Were you disappointed? Relieved? Happy?

Play Together: Twisted Tales Happy endings are optional in this storytelling adventure!

You will need:

  • Notebook paper
  • Pen or pencil

CINEMATTERS Choose someone to start your story. He or she should write the first sentence of the story and then fold over the paper to conceal it. The paper is then passed around with each person adding a sentence or two. (Let young children dictate their ideas to be added.) When everyone has had a chance to write at least five times, unroll the paper and read your twisted tale to the whole family. Enjoy the laughs as your disjointed scenes became a hilarious bedtime story, with or without a happy ending!
