Pre-Movie Review: "Delgo,"
In Theaters December 12, 2008

Delgo, Fathom Studios.
Rated PG.

Daisy C. here, with another pre-movie preview. I’m sorry I haven’t written a preview in a while, but there have been no movies which could possibly appeal to younger children. While good movies have come out (Milk was fantastic), there were no movies which I could review for the purposes here.

This weekend marks the opening of the film Delgo, a movie which on face value looks like it could be interesting. This film took over 3 years to complete (the late Anne Bancroft, one of the voice talents, actually passed away in June 2005). One would think that if you work on something for three years, you would be able to create some semblance of original idea.

Unfortunately, this movie fails at this level. When I read the synopsis on Rotten Tomatoes, I thought to myself, “Romeo and Juliet meets The Wicked Witch of the West meets Lord of the Rings meets every children’s adventure movie ever made”. I’ll let you decide:

‘The land of Jhamora is torn apart by the mutual prejudice of two peoples—the winged Nohrin, masters of the skies, and the terrestrial Lockni, who harness the mystical powers of the land. When Delgo (Freddie Prinze, Jr.), a reckless Lockni teenager, forms a forbidden friendship with the spunky Nohrin Princess Kyla (Jennifer Love Hewitt), hostilities between the two peoples escalate, setting the stage for an exiled Empress (Anne Bancroft) to exact her revenge and reclaim her rule. Falsely imprisoned, Delgo and his faint-hearted best friend, Filo (Chris Kattan), must put aside their differences to join forces with a sworn enemy (Val Kilmer) and travel to the mysterious land of Perran, where they discover more than just a scorned Empress and her two bumbling servants.’

As you can tell from the above synopsis, this movie has a great voice talent. It is truly a shame that it is wasted on poor animation and a weaker storyline. I’ve seen better animation in a video game, and the animation does not even compare to some of the bigger animated movies already out on the market. Bolt and Madagascar 2 blow away this movie in terms of animation and storyline.

Now, I may be being a little harsh on this film, considering the film’s origins. This movie was created by an Atlanta studio far away from the Hollywood big shots in California. It is a welcome sight to see lesser studios attempt to make an animated film which could be shown on the theatres. Younger children may even enjoy the simple nature of this film, because there are several moments which will keep them glued to the screen. However, if you decide to see this movie, I’ll urge parents to bring a newspaper. This is not a very good film.

I hope this review is helpful in making your decision to go to the movies. Happy watching! - Daisy C.
