Pre-Movie Review: "The Tale of Despereaux," In Theaters December 19, 2008
The Tale of Despereaux, Walt Disney Pictures. Rated PG-13 for some mild rude humor and mild language
This movie came out last week, so this is not really a preview as much as a review. Nevertheless, this is a very cute film and is something worth seeing, but there is a caveat. Despereaux is a brave, little mouse who is born into a world surrounded by the fear of his fellow mice. He desires to obtain something more with his life than the life of scurrying away from danger and wants to live life rather than survive it. The story is one which tugs at the heart strings and (surprisingly) is pulled off rather well. The animation is simply gorgeous and the voice talent also provides another layer which makes this one of the better animated movies of the year. However, this movie has several scary points which may scare younger children to the core. Despite the light ad campaign’s wishes to attract a younger audience, it does have some scenes which are not appropriate for the youngest of children. I would say that those 8 and up would be safe, and I would recommend this movie to them. Use caution for anyone younger.
I hope this review is helpful in making your decision to go to the movies. Happy watching! - Daisy C.
