Pre-Movie Review: "Twilight," In Theaters November 21, 2008
Twilight, Imprint Entertainment. Rated PG-13 for some violence and a scene of sensuality
This movie has received a tremendous amount of hype among moviegoers. Something also tells me that this movie is going to be a box office success. However, I’m not buying the hype nor will I recommend this movie to anyone outside the target audience: 16 year old females and their grandmothers.
To provide some background, Twilight is based on a popular fantasy/romance book series which details the love story between Bella Swan (the shy, new girl at school) and Edward Cullen (the mysterious boy who she has a crush on). When Bella first meets Edward, he seems repulsed by her presence and tries to get away from her. However, this is due to Edward’s inability to read her thoughts......his growing attraction to her...the fact that her blood smells sickeningly sweet...wait a minute...
Long story short, he’s a vampire. That’s right, ladies and gentlemen: Vampire romance. Because nothing says “mysterious boy providing sexual tension love interest for young females” like a vampire.
The film is rated PG-13 for good reason. The entire premise of the story is the sexual tension forbidden love story between the two teenagers. In fact, I’m quite certain that the movie would be classified as a teenage romance movie if the fact that "the hot, sexy dude attractive, young male is a vampire" is ignored. The film is constantly bombarded with metaphors for the sexual frustration which accompanies adolescent abstinence. If you believe your child is not ready for this type of subject matter, I would not recommend letting them view it.
Whether this is a good movie to see depends on who you are. If you are a fan of the book series or fit the target audience above, this film might be something to sink your teeth into (drat, I almost made it out of the review without a bad vampire pun). However, those outside this narrow group may not enjoy this film. The editing, special effects, and camerawork are something out of one of those teenage drama shows on the WB (I mean, CW). You would think a blockbuster fantasy movie would be better put together.
I hope this review is helpful in making your decision to go to the movies. Happy watching! - Daisy C.
