Use these tips for a less stressful moving day!
Call the board of education in your new town to arrange for enrolling or transferring your children to a new school.
Arrange to have your utilities connected the day before you move in your new home. You can have the service in your old home turned off the day after you've moved.
If you're leaving a rental apartment, make sure you review the lease and make sure you leave the apartment clean so you can have your security deposit refunded.
Pack a survival kit that includes basic items that you'll need most during and after your move (papers and payment for movers, important phone numbers, medications & medical records, insurance papers, garbage bags, bathroom items, telephone, radio, towels, etc.).
If you have a pet, be sure to include your pet's medicines, foods, and vet information.
Make sure your pet always wears an ID tag on his/her collar.
Don't forget to call your long distance phone company to get the best rates for your new phone number.
If you've filled out the US Postal Service's Change of Address Form, be sure to look for the Confirmation Letter and Welcome Kit. It will contain helpful information about your new neighborhood.
You should have an idea of where your furniture is going to be placed in your new home. This saves time and problems.
Since you shouldn't disconnect phone service in your old home before you move into your new home, keep one phone plugged in. This way you can still stay in touch with friends, family, and anyone else :-).
If you're moving to a new town, check out books to read to your children so they can learn about their new neighborhood.
Create a scrapbook of memories of this special day. Take photos of family and friends packing, saying goodbye, etc. Give older children a disposable camera and let them take pictures from their eye level for some interesting shots!
Remember that moving day doesn't last forever. Look forward to wonderful times in your new home.
