The Internet is a great source of information -- but unfortunately in the same atmostphere as the family-friendly websites, exists a dark side that is unsafe for children. If we are willing to allow our children to surf the Internet, we should be willing to take the steps to protect them from websites that are unapproved for their eyes. AmiWeb, created by MID Multimedia, allows parents to do just that.
AmiWeb, a child-safe browser that parents can download, offers a safe environment for the whole family. When parents first install AmiWeb, they are prompted to create a password. This password is needed to sign on and leave the AmiWeb browser. This leaves no chance that your child will be able to leave AmiWeb and open up another "un-safe" browser or program. Parents can also add a location bar and other websites that they approve of, with the password.
Children will be kept entertained while using AmiWeb - narration is by a cartoon character, "AmiWeb". He talks, sings, dances, and keeps your child company while he/she surfs a safe Internet. Big, colorful buttons and an interactive navigation bar is sure to keep your child interested. With "AmiWeb", your child won't really be alone while on the Internet :).
Each time you log on, the browser connects to the AmiWeb portal and checks for updates. For parents, AmiWeb comes complete with a Parent's Corner, which includes helpful hints, Internet website recommendations, and parent tips. For children, they are promised a child-safe Internet surfing experience, where the contents are carefully selected and regularly checked. As a result, children will find many fun and educational activities, which are divided into 4 categories:
- Games: Children will find sites consisting of games, drawings, crafts, etc. Some sites that were recommended to us during our review were: Lego, Winnie the Pooh, Disney, and Kids Space.
- Discoveries: Children will find sites consisting of science-related information. Some sites that were recommended to us during our review were: Deep Sea World, National Geographic Kids, The Space Place, and Try Science.
- Learning: Children will find sites consisting of educational topics. Some sites that were recommended to us during our review were: Arthur, Fun Brain, White House for Kids, and The Learning Planet.
- Hobbies: Children will find sites consisting of fun activities and hobbies. Some sites that were recommended to us during our review were: WB Kids, Sports Illustrated Kids, Barbie, and DKTK's Printable Crafts.
New websites are added every day, and each site chosen (as well as their links), is visited regularly and removed from the AmiWeb database if they are found to present any danger to children. Websites are also screened for links to commercial search engines, which is a doorway to the dark side of the Internet.
My ParenTime recommends AmiWeb, (and so does my 5 yr old who found it very easy to navigate and understand) - it's very easy to install and use, it's interactive, and best of all, it's safe for children! It accomplishes the task of keeping the Internet safe for children. Thank you MID Multimedia - this is a parents' web browser dream come true :).
