Special Book Review
"The Hurried Child",David Elkind, Ph.D.
Are you familiar with the saying, "Life is too short, so go slow and enjoy every moment of it"? Well, I may have changed it slightly, but the basic idea is that we should all take time for each stage of our lives, including our childhood.
The book, "The Hurried Child" discusses how children these days are "growing up too fast too soon". In today's world, children are rushed in many areas of their lives - by their parents, their school, by coaches, etc. They are forced to grow up fast in order to deal with certain feelings; they are subjected to numerous standardized tests in school; and children are expected to read before they enter school.
Why shouldn't children be allowed to enjoy their childhood, without the stress of rushing to grow up? Doesn't each child advance at their own level? Why should we make children feel as if they are anything less than they're supposed to be? We should focus on meeting children's needs without putting unnecessary pressures on them.
My ParenTime recommends the book, "The Hurried Child" -- what a wonderful book! It's thought-provoking and discusses real issues that will affect children for a lifetime. And just think...we have the power to allow them to enjoy every minute of it :-).
