Special Book Review

Book: "The Art of Teaching Art to Children: In School and At Home"

Read an excerpt from the book!

The Art of Teaching Art to Children Creating art is a wonderful way for children to express themselves. Art also gives them the ability to share their creativity with others. In the book, "The Art of Teaching Art to Children," readers are invited to learn ways in which children can develop their creativity, enhance their artistic skills, and feel good about their creations.

The book is categorized by medium (paints, clay, collage, etc.), and includes very helpful tips and ideas about how to foster a child's talent and love for creating art. There are many examples and notes throughout the book, that the author describes from her own teachings. Each category includes a helpful parents' section, where parents are given the answers to such important questions as "What materials do we use?", and "Why is this medium important for my child to work with?". These tips give parents the know-how to help their children create art at home. Throughout the book there is artwork by the author's students...this adds a nice personal touch :-).

My ParenTime highly recommends the book, "The Art of Teaching Art to Children" by Nancy Beal -- as an artist, I can relate to the situations described in the book, and remember the different ways I was taught art while growing up. When children are given a direction, while being allowed the freedom to explore and create, they can more easily develop the necessary skills that will allow them to achieve in creating art. The skills that children learn while creating artwork (freedom of expression, creativity, etc.), will no doubt carry over to other areas of their lives...thus enabling them to become better people :-).
