In the book, "Spike the Rebel," by Carl Sommer, a boy named Spike goes around being mean to people and not caring what they say about him. It isn't until he hurts himself and needs help, that he realizes the power of being kind. Spike realizes that he wasn't really happy being mean, and makes a change for the better.
